Coolought Garden and Garden Center

Caroline and Harry Deacon, Coulaght Garden and Garden Center

I love to visit this garden any time of year. Created in 3 acres of farm land in 80’s by Harry and Caroline Deacon, the garden is flat and grass walkways guide you through a variety of several hundred flowering shrubs, grasses, seasonal garden flowers and an array of unusual trees. There is roughly 100 Clematis varieties alone. Strategically place seating allows you to sit and absorb the silence, breath in the clear air laced with the scent of blossoms and meditate and escape from all things that may be bothering you.

Spring is always a beautiful time of year. Nature is waking up and moving into their next phase of the life circle. Walking through this garden, the shrubbery is well pruned back in readiness for this explosion of new life. The frogs have been hard at work evidenced by the abundance of frog spawn, more evidence of the purity of this garden as a haven for wildlife. The bees were busy gathering what they could from the heaters and some of the early blooming flowers.

My visit was towards the end of February. The main purpose was to see natures exhibition of Crocuses, a blanket of colour in the lawn in front of this c300 year old home. These bulbs were planted by Harry’s family two generations back, that’s about 90 years ago, and perform this show of nature’s beauty at the same time every year announcing the start of spring, and will keep up the exhibition well into March.

Arbor in Coolaught Garden and Garden Center

There is another spectacle in this garden which is a c50 meter Arbor covered in yellow Laburnum. This tunnel of relaxing yellow colour and strong scent is a very special space where lovers can gently hold hands and nurture sweet whispers. This spectacle happens around mid-May and runs into June.
